AIA Lecture: “Lost Ships of the Canadian Arctic” (Prof. Hector Williams, AIA Bass Lecturer, UBC)

The recent discovery of the remains of Sir John Franklin’s ships Erebus and Terror near King William Island has been front page news across Canada, but there are other lost ships in northern waters from Jens Munk’s frigate Unicorn of 1620 crushed by ice in the estuary of the Churchill River to the modern ghost ship of the Arctic, the Baychimo. Hector Williams was raised in Churchill and has been working on Munk for years as well as on his work in Greece; he has gone through the NW Passage twice and is currently working on the unpublished papers of Sir Edward Belcher (who lost four of his five ships in the Franklin search) in UBC Special Collections. His talk will survey these and other lost ships of Canada’s northern waters. Professor Williams has been a trustee of the Vancouver Maritime Museum since 1990 and served as President of its Board from 2006-9.
